Patriot Day 2023

This morning, at the flag pole in front of the main entrance to Batavia High School, students of BHS music played the National Anthem while the American flag was raised. Brian Van Kley, Instructor of Instrumental Music & Rock & Roll Methods at BHS, conducted and shared some words of remembrance for what we lost on September 11, 2001. Here are his words:

Good morning. Today, we come together to remember what we lost on September 11th, 2001. On this day, 22 years ago, nearly 3000 people… mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, daughters, sons, wives, and husbands… left home, never to return.

Today, we remember.

The faces are burned into our memory. The names are burned into our memory. The images are burned into our memory.

Today, we remember those we lost at 8:46 a.m. on American Airlines Flight 11 and in the North Tower.

Today, we remember those we lost at 9:03 a.m. on United Airlines Flight 175 and in the South Tower.

Today, we remember those we lost at 9:37 a.m. on American Airlines Flight 77 and in the Pentagon.

Today, we remember those we lost at 9:49 a.m. when the South Tower Collapsed.

Today, we remember those we lost in a lonely farmer’s field at 10:03 a.m. on United Airlines Flight 93.

Today, we remember those we lost at 10:28 a.m. when the North Tower collapsed.

The faces are burned into our memory. The names are burned into our memory. The images are burned into our memory. Today, we remember.

As we end our time of reflection, please join me in a moment of silence…
