Interpreting MAP Scores

I just received my child’s MAP scores, now what?
If your child is in Kindergarten through 8th grade at Batavia Public School District 101, they will take the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) test three times this year to measure academic growth in reading and academics. If your child is in high school and taking Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, Geometry and Reading/Writing Workshop, they will take the MAP test three times this year to measure academic growth in math and/or reading. Within 10 days of the close of the testing window, you will receive your child’s results either by mail, e-mail, or backpack.

To fully understand your child’s results, and what each section of the report means, BPS101’s Curriculum and Instruction Division has provided two incredibly helpful guides:

  • A Parent’s Guide to MAP – This guide explains “What is MAP,” “What is a RIT Score,” and “Is Your Child on Grade Level?” You can download and print this PDF and compare the charts on page two with your child’s progress report.
  • NWEA- MAP Growth Family Toolkit – This provides links to videos showing how MAP Growth is designed to support student learning and links to guides showing how MAP growth works, what it measures, and how it’s scored.

If after reviewing your child’s MAP Progress Report and the two guides above, you still have questions or concerns, contact your child’s teacher to set up a phone or in-person conference. Key things to consider before and during a conference include:

  • How is my child doing overall?
  • Which goal listed in the MAP Progress Report is my child’s strength, and how can the parent-teacher-student team work to foster this strength at home and at school?
  • Which goal listed in the MAP Progress Report is my child’s area of need, and how can the parent-teacher-student team work to improve this area of need at home and at school?
  • Are there patterns appearing from test to test and year to year that should be discussed?
