Early Childhood Education Screening
During the developmental and preschool years, parents often wonder whether their child’s development is typical of their same-age peers. Developmental screenings are designed to address these concerns and help parents learn more about their child’s development. Batavia Public School District 101 offers free developmental screenings throughout the year to assess young children’s skills.
- Children 33 months to 5 years of age are eligible for an Early Childhood Screening in English / Spanish.
Each screening is by appointment (call 630-937-8000). At that time, we will gather some basic information. In Batavia, we have a two-step screening process.
Step 1 is a paper screening, where the family fills out two nationally normed developmental screeners, some district-developed screeners, and a family information form. The EC diagnostic team then reviews this information and makes further recommendations.
Step 2, if recommended, would be an in-person screening.
A full in-person screening assesses the development of children who are 33 months to five years of age in the areas of:
- Speech/Language
- Fine Motor
- Gross Motor
- Pre-Academics/Cognition
- Social-Emotional
- Self-Care
A full in-person screening takes approximately one hour to complete. After the screening, parents can discuss the results and any concerns about their child with a member of the screening team.
The team may also recommend just a speech and language screening, which would take place with a district speech and language pathologist for children who have concerns about speech and language.
Before scheduling your in-person screening, you must prove that you reside within the school district boundaries. A parent or guardian must visit Rosalie Jones Administration Center at 335 W Wilson Street with the documents listed below.
- Proof of Residency
- Your child’s original county-issue birth certificate (will be photocopied and returned to you)
- Affidavit of Enrollment and Residency
- Registration Form (Only complete page 1 for a single child)
In-person screenings take place at Alice Gustafson Elementary School (the main entrance is on the west side of the building).
▪ Infant and Toddler Early Intervention Screening Schedule (Birth to 32 months)
Infant and toddler screenings are completed using two nationally normed screeners completed by the parent and a family information sheet. After reviewing the screeners, an EC staff member will review the information with the parent, and if there are concerns, they will refer the family to Day One Network, Inc.
Batavia Public Schools works closely with Day One Network, Inc. (Child & Family Connections #4 or CFC) to become aware of children who may qualify for Early Childhood programs. Focusing on the special needs of children who are not yet three years old, Day One Network houses the Early Intervention (EI) program that serves our district. Beginning with an initial phone call from district residents who have concerns for their children, ages birth-32 months, the program has the potential to address those areas of development that may concern parents.
Once children approach their third birthday, the Early Intervention Program initiates the transition process. The value of the early Intervention program is the opportunity to determine needs, set goals, and start working to help the students at the earliest possible time.
